- Aqua Dig is an aquatic journey that puts you in command of a drilling submarine entered in a contest to reach the deepest depths of the ocean. It’s a blend of puzzle and adventure elements where a careful balance must be struck between survival and greed.
That’s because since you are in a submarine, you must always pay attention to your oxygen level. The only way to replenish it is to resurface, and the farther down you dig, the more difficult it becomes to follow a path back to the surface. There are a few options however that give you a better shot of reaching your goal.
As you descend deeper to the ocean floor, you can unearth various minerals to be traded for submarine upgrades. The five categories of upgrades include oxygen tank, engine, cargo hold, sub hull and drill and each greatly enhance underwater effectiveness. For example, the oxygen tank allows you to stay underwater for longer periods of time, or the cargo hold gives you more space to store minerals mined. The drill is also important because the deeper you go, the tougher the material is to get through.
Obviously though, the minerals are not in a straight descending line. You must scour the ocean floor to reach various deposits all the while maintaining course deeper and deeper, and at the same time not proceeding too far so that you are left without oxygen. If so, you are doomed to start all over, and that includes an entry-level sub. Save points are available at any time, but these are only effective while the sub remains intact.
Directing the submarine uses four-way controls, though you cannot drill upwards. The path drilled must be followed back to the surface and sometimes it’s a bit touchy when trying to follow it. In terms of audio and visual, it’s quite plain on both parts so don’t expect any sort of sensory overload.
One final feature of Aqua Dig is the ability to post your best dive times to a leaderboard. This adds some sense of accomplishment to a game that is otherwise and exercise in diving and surfacing. Seriously, early on it can be very tedious going back up for oxygen frequently and while some might enjoy this type of balance in a game, I’d prefer a different solution to this, but then it might have been compared too much to Mr. Driller.
